Breakdown Cover FAQs
What is Breakdown Cover?
If your vehicle stops working and brings your journey to an abrupt halt, Breakdown Cover steps in to get you on the road again.
Vehicle breakdown could be caused by all sorts of issues, from a flat battery to a punctured tyre. By having Breakdown Cover in place, you can call for help to get the problem fixed. It doesn’t matter whether you’re on the side of a motorway or stuck in the driveway of your own home – someone will come to assist you.
Our Breakdown Cover, provided by On Insurance in partnership with the AA, has two options. You can choose from standard UK Only cover, or get extra UK benefits and European coverage with UK+ and European Breakdown Cover. These benefits include a replacement hire car and overnight accommodation, just in case the problem cannot be fixed then and there.
How much is Breakdown Cover?
The cost of Breakdown Cover depends on how much protection you want.
At Chris Knott Insurance, our Breakdown Cover starts from just £65. This includes roadside assistance, national recovery and HomeStart.
However, if you want an enhanced UK policy or European cover, you can choose UK+ and European Breakdown Insurance. These policies start from £85.
Whichever policy you pick, you can benefit from preferential rates for additional vehicle policies.
Does breakdown cover include flat tyres?
Getting a flat tyre is not an uncommon occurrence. Fortunately, most Breakdown Cover policies will include this, so you can call for help and get your tyre changed if this happens to you.
Which types of vehicles are covered?
Our Breakdown Cover is for private vehicles or light commercial vehicles. This includes light vans, trailers, campervans, trailer and motor caravans, motorhomes and minibuses. We are also able to insure motorcycles.
In addition, we do not set limits on the car’s age, which means that you can get Vintage or Classic Car Breakdown Cover too.
However, there are restrictions in terms of vehicle size.
The vehicle must be within 3.5 tonnes and no wider than 2.55m. For European cover, the vehicle cannot be longer than 7m or higher than 3m. These size restrictions will also include anything attached to your vehicle, such as luggage racks and tow bars. Trailers and caravans are measured separately.
For motorcycles, you will not be able to get European cover for those that are under 200cc.
Can I get European breakdown cover?
Yes, you can!
If you’re planning to drive in Europe, you can choose UK+ and European Breakdown Cover.
This policy gives you enhanced UK protection as well as the following European cover:
- 24-hour Helpline
- Roadside Assistance
- Recovery
- Replacement Vehicle Hire
- Break-in Cover
- Parts Sourcing
- Emergency Accommodation
Can you arrange Classic Car breakdown cover?
Of course! We know that classic cars need quite a lot of looking after in order to keep them working, which means that breakdowns are not uncommon. There is therefore no age limit on the cover provided by On Insurance in partnership with The AA, which means you can cover your prized vintage motors.
Is multi vehicle breakdown cover available?
Yes. If you have more than one car or motorcycle in your household, you can insure them all on the same policy. However, you can benefit from preferential rates if you take out additional individual policies. Talk with our team to find out more.
