Low Mileage Car Insurance FAQs
What is Limited Mileage Car Insurance?
Limited Mileage Car Insurance is a type of cover for drivers who have below average mileage on their cars.
This may be because you are retired, have a short commute or you’re a student. Limited mileage is also more likely to be the case if you own a second car or a classic car.
Typically, because you are on the road for less time, you will present less of a risk to the insurer. This means that you may be able to benefit from the lower premiums offered by Low Mileage Car Insurance.
There are several options for this kind of insurance. You may have a pay-as-you-go policy with a tracking device attached to your car, for example. Alternatively, a set mileage could be included in your policy. This is typical for Classic Car Insurance and usually includes a choice of 1,500, 3,000 or 5,000 miles.
If you drive infrequently, you may also want to consider Short Term Car Insurance.
How do I know if I do limited mileage?
Each insurer is likely to have their own criteria for what counts as limited mileage. However, if you fall below the statistical average, you may qualify.
According to research by the UK government’s Department For Transport, the average car covered 5,300 miles in a year in 2021. However, this sample was affected by Covid-19. In 2018, before the pandemic struck, the average was 7,600 miles. You may therefore like to use this as your benchmark.
To estimate your average annual mileage, take a look at your previous MOT certificates. These will record your mileage at the time of the inspection.
You could also reset your mileage meter and record how much you drive in a week (make sure this week is fairly typical of your usual activity). You can then multiply this figure by 52 to get an estimation of your mileage for the year.
It is important that these estimates are as accurate as possible. Widely underestimating your mileage could mean that your policy is declared as invalid.
Who could benefit from Low Mileage Car Insurance?
Anyone who drives their car infrequently could benefit from Low Mileage Car Insurance.
This includes:
- Retirees who do little travelling
- Those with a short commute
- Students
- Remote workers
- Classic car owners
What happens if I start driving more?
If your mileage creeps over the agreed threshold or you start to drive more regularly or further, you need to tell your insurer or broker.
They can then adjust your policy so that it takes this extra mileage into account. This will help to ensure that your policy remains valid.
How much does Low Mileage Car Insurance cost?
The cost of Limited Mileage Car Insurance will depend on more factors than just your mileage.
An insurer will also take into account your age, driving experience and involvement in any incidents.
