Allotment associations have unique needs when it comes to arranging insurance. To find out more, we spoke to Denise Bromley of The Elizabeth Way Allotment Association.
In terms of allotment associations, The Elizabeth Way Allotment Association is on the smaller side, governing just 29 plots. But this Coventry-based group still needs to ensure that it protects its plot holders, trusted persons and members of the public with the right insurance.
To learn more, we sat down with the association’s secretary, Denise Bromley. Denise has been a part of this association for 20 years and now acts as a rallying point for action alongside her more traditional duties of letting plots.
What does The Elizabeth Way Allotment Association do for members?
Essentially, as Secretary and a committee of seven, we keep the site in good working order, make sure plots are worked and that everything is kept tidy. Water was an issue so a water station was installed. Plus, we are now in the process of replacing the car park gates because they are difficult to open, clearing the car park to make more parking spaces, as well as sorting out the insurance for the site.
What are the challenges of managing an allotment association?
Our main challenge is that our association, and the allotment site itself, is very small. This means that finance is a bit of an issue. The present committee for the association was only elected in July 2022 and to be able to cover expenses we have had to increase the rent.
What are the challenges when it comes to insurance?
Insurance for an allotment association is a bit daunting when you first come to it. It takes time to get your head around what insurance cover you need.
Chris Knott Insurance was really helpful and useful in this regard. We were thinking of getting rid of cover for bee-keeping, for instance, but Chris Knott Insurance advised us not to. They made us think about the risks and implications should anything happen on site. You cannot be sure how people will react should they have an encounter with the bees. We appreciated Chris Knott Insurance being direct and advising us that it would probably be best not to drop this insurance, so we decided to keep the cover.
What insurance do you now have in place?
We have Public Liability Insurance with an extension of cover to include the keeping of bees on site by way of a bee-keeping endorsement.
How did you hear about Chris Knott?
We were already insured with them, so we decided to stay as they understood the insurance cover we require as an allotment association. They were very helpful so that by the time I received the policy I felt confident that I understood it.
How would you describe Chris Knott’s customer service?
I’m very impressed with how quickly they came back to me. When I first got in touch, they called me the very same day. They’re also very thorough and sent the documents through straightaway – I didn’t have to ask for them. I would definitely recommend them for their efficiency and speediness.
