Back in the 1990s, Off The Fence had humble beginnings. It was first started by CEO Paul Young and his wife, Wendy, who decided to ‘get off the fence’ and do something to help the most marginalised people in the Brighton & Hove area.
To do this, Paul and a friend initially went onto the streets to provide help and support to the people they found there.
Twenty-five years on, and the charity now has more than 150 trained volunteers, staff and interns. Together, they work to end spiritual and social poverty in Brighton & Hove. This has led to the implementation of day centres, outreach vans and activities in 15 local schools.
As a result of these varied activities, Off The Fence has complex Charity Insurance needs. Getting the most cost-effective cover is also vital to ensure that precious charity funds go where they are most needed.

Can you describe what Off The Fence’s mission is?
Our mission is to reach the disadvantaged and marginalised in Brighton & Hove. We are moving towards this goal by working with the homeless community, women in crisis situations and young people in schools.
This has led to initiatives such as Project Antifreeze. This activity sees us provide food, hot drinks, sleeping bags and hygiene products to the homeless.
What are the challenges faced by Off The Fence?
Like the business community, the charity sector has been hit by a lack of people to fill positions. A lack of funds is another challenge faced by all charities, including us. For this reason, ensuring that Off The Fence is not over-paying for insurance is a key challenge and concern.
